About Det Norske Veritas

Stiftelsen Det Norske Veritas is a free-standing, autonomous and independent foundation whose purpose is to safeguard life, property and the environment. This purpose is achieved through its ownership of companies – of which the most important is the DNV group, which is 100% owned by the foundation. DNV is a global assurance and risk management company, providing classification, certification, and technical assurance and advisory services.

history

The history of Stiftelsen Det Norske Veritas and DNV is inseparable. Det Norske Veritas dates back to 1864, when it was officially founded in Oslo as a membership organization. Members were Norway’s mutual marine insurance clubs, created Det Norske Veritas to establish uniform rules and procedures for assessing the risk of underwriting individual vessels. In 1978, Det Norske Veritas became a fully independent, self-owned foundation. Since then, DNV has developed its business globally and in many other areas (see dnv.com).
